Abstract

The Abepura-Waena area has a high rainfall potential, which poses a risk of surface runoff and inundation if the existing drainage system is not designed based on adequate design rainfall values. This study aims to determine the design rainfall for various return periods as a basis for drainage system planning in the Abepura-Waena area using the Haspers Method. The data used are annual maximum daily rainfall records from the Abepura-Waena Station, BMKG Region V Jayapura, over a 10-year observation period (2001-2010). The analysis was carried out by calculating the mean and standard deviation of the annual maximum rainfall, then applying the Haspers frequency factor to obtain the design rainfall for return periods of 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years. The results show a regional average rainfall of 324.40 mm with a standard deviation of 178.54 mm. The design rainfall increases consistently with the length of the return period, from 285.12 mm for the 2-year return period to 936.80 mm for the 100-year return period. The magnitude of the design rainfall indicates that the Abepura-Waena area has high rainfall intensity, so the calculation results are recommended for use as an input parameter in designing drainage channel dimensions to reduce the risk of seasonal inundation and flooding.
